Why social media is well worthwhile for dentists
Whilst not directly measurable, social media certainly does offer huge ROI potential
Even the most ‘tech’ and web shy individuals will have heard about the main social media channels like Twitter, Facebook, Google+ etc. However, even within the enlightened core of dentists who have realised that the web is their first priority for marketing, there is still some scepticism about the actual benefits of social media. Often we hear the question “if you can’t measure the ROI, why should I be involved” – which is entirely reasonable if not a little short-sighted. So let’s take a closer look at why social media makes sense for dentists…….
Can social media be used to grow my brand and increase patient numbers?
The answer is an unequivocal “yes”! Social media channels are not just about socialising, procrastinating and generally having a laugh. Whilst this type of engagement is extremely important, the following benefits are also very clear:
- visibility and openness to your patients, existing and potential
- better search engine rankings (this is already important and will become increasingly so)
- a direct and fairly instantaneous communication channel
- the ability to establish yourself as an authority in front of a wide audience
- keeping your knowledge up-to-date by following leading professionals and peering with those who hold similar interests
So is “social” just a passing fad?
Well, with over a billion users on Facebook, hundreds of millions on Twitter and years worth of video being uploaded to YouTube every day, its quite clear that world is communicating through these channels more and more as time progresses. “Social” is not a fad and really must become a key component for those seeking a serious and effective online dental marketing strategy.
No-one is claiming that your bottom-line will jump several fold overnight if you just publish a few tweets and a quick Facebook page. However, if you invest the time and effort (actually it doesn’t take too much), and build and nurture you social profiles over time, you will certainly benefit. Like all things, the potential is huge but can only be fully realised with some time, resources and focused effort. Oh, and remember that it can also be a lot of fun!
Social media is here to stay – ignoring it is a big mistake.
