Unfortunately this is not correct; particularly in competitive areas where dentists are already promoting their websites actively and have been firmly in place at the top end of the ranking results for some time. In this scenario, a great site will not be sufficient to get you up there, even if it has more information and uses that latest “on site” SEO techniques. This is not a play to sell SEO services, it’s simply how the search landscape works.

Can a great website ever get me prominent in Google without SEO?

The answer is yes, but only where competition is slight. So if you are a new practice in a relatively small village where there are just three or four competing businesses, then if you build a really good website, you might expect it to rank well on page one without a comprehensive SEO campaign to support it. Of course it still makes sense to ensure that you have submitted your website to Google “My Business” as well as implementing Google “Search Console” and submission to decent local business directories. Those free tools, along with seeking out reviews, should give you a great chance of getting on to page one quite quickly – but only in areas of limited competition.

My practice is in a competitive environment – what do I need to do?

If you are just getting established on-line with a new website and your dental business is already competing with quite a few others, chances are you will enter the search rankings a few pages back. This is unsurprising given that many of the businesses around you will already be established in Google and with the likelihood that several of them on page one, will already be running SEO campaigns. Whilst Google will always try to promote high quality websites, content alone will not get you to page one for generic dental search terms such as “dentist Trumpton” – and this is where search optimisation comes in.

The basics of search engine optimisation

Whilst you can undertake some elements of SEO in-house, you will likely be best served by outsourcing these services to a competent, ethical digital marketing company. They will check your website to ensure that all of the “on-site” factors are optimised and compliant with best practice and also renew this ongoing. They will then begin a monthly programme of work designed to move your website forward including techniques such as blogging, link-building and selective use of social media to broadcast content. Good marketers will also furnish you with a monthly report which gives complete transparency on the marketing activity including “conversions” (new enquiries) to evaluate return-on-investment.

Pay-per-click to gain early momentum

It can take several months to gain traction with an organic SEO campaign (the free results) so many dentists implement pay-per-click using Google AdWords as an interim measure. This allows you to advertise prominently on page one of the search results, albeit you do require a realistic budget for click costs paid to Google.

Summary

Contrary to what some web designers might have you believe, a new website alone won’t get you to the top of Google unless your local competition is minor. In most areas, the dentists in and around you will already have established websites and some of them will be undertaking SEO. Your first objective will be to push your website on to page one and then progressively higher to compete in the top area which generates most website traffic. For this you will need to implement your own SEO programme which will need to be budgeted for. Without this, your website, new or not, will languish in the regions of Google where few ever look.

If you would like more information about search engine optimisation for dentists, including realistic budgeting to compete in your own location, please get in touch with the Dental Media web marketing team on 01332 672548.

Will my website alone ensure great Google rankings or do I need more?
