Unfortunately this trend seems to be growing, with more and more web design companies attempting to get on the digital marketing bandwagon by advertising so-called SEO packages but actually delivering little or nothing at all.

The trick being used to dupe those who don’t know about SEO, is through failing to explain the two key components of it i.e. on-site and off-site factors. On-site SEO deals with how the actual structure and content of a website is optimised, whereas off-site SEO covers the external factors e.g. back-links, which are extremely important for website ranking.

Whilst you can get the on-site optimisation of a website done fairly easily as long as the initial platform is good quality, the off-site work is the ongoing monthly graft which really makes the difference. Particularly where there is a degree of competition from other dentists, as is the case in most locations these days, your website isn’t really going anywhere in the Google rankings without an off-site SEO campaign. So if your expensive monthly package doesn’t explicitly cover off-site SEO, then you need to ask some searching questions!

What should you check for?

Design companies get away with selling SEO that isn’t, because the average dentist or dental practice manager doesn’t really know much about how Google works. They may know that a good Google position is important, but not the mechanisms which contribute to it – and understandably so. After all, their primary business is dentistry.

So, for the unscrupulous SEO company, it’s quite easy to make a client feel they are getting something when actually they aren’t. Please read through the following check-lists and then I invite you to check-out the SEO offerings from some of the well-known dental marketing companies to compare. I won’t link them here but they’re easy to find.

What proactive SEO isn’t….

regular re-submission to search engines (there really is only one which is worthwhile – Google – and you do not need to re-submit)

checking your keyword positions – this is part of a good program but checking doesn’t equal improving

making content changes – this can be useful and is part of on-site SEO, but alone it isn’t going to fire you up the rankings

updating your website gallery – this is a straightforward maintenance task, not optimisation

changing your navigation structure – maintenance

checking for GDC compliance – definitely not SEO!

other general on-site maintenance adjustments

Whilst certain aspects of on-site work are clearly SEO related, e.g. adjusting title tags, checking page speeds, periodic content refreshes etc, most of what you see advertised as SEO is simply maintenance. You can end up paying £300 + per month for this and almost certainly you won’t even use the service every month. Money for old rope?

What proactive SEO is….

Now that we can differentiate simple website maintenance tasks from actual optimisation, let’s take a closer look at what your digital marketing team should be discussing when it comes to improving your dental website search results:

ongoing on-site optimisation, some we touched on above

blogging and content generation designed to attract website back-links

back-link building

social media and how it integrates with SEO

optimising for your Google “local” (map) presence

increasing website traffic

measuring conversions and ROI

Simply doing basic on-site maintenance isn’t going to help much where Google is concerned and it’s folly to believe that this constitutes a good SEO strategy. However, too many dentists fall for it, only to question what they are paying for a year or so down the track.

Summary

Website search optimisation needs two clear disciplines; on-site and off-site development. One without the other is simply not going to work well, particularly where competition exists. Dental web design companies who don’t possess the skills and expertise to undertake the all-important off-site work, are selling what are effectively elaborate and expensive maintenance packages under the guise of “SEO” which dupe unsuspecting website owners into large monthly payments. To avoid disappointment and a depleted budget with little to show for it, please use the check-list above and ask for detail about the services you are paying for.

If you are looking for dental website SEO or perhaps you are uncertain about what you are currently subscribing to, please call the Dental Media digital marketing team for no-obligation advice on 01332 672548. We’ll be pleased to guide you through the murk.

Don’t get duped.
