This is particularly prevalent with those companies who offer WordPress designs and who leverage on the vast array of templates which are available for £50 or less.

The advantages for a design company are quite apparent; firstly they can secure a professional looking site design for very little money and then sell it on with some relatively minor modifications, potentially for thousands of pounds. Secondly, there is an ever increasing source of new templates meaning that the hardest part of the process, the conceptual design, is done for them. Thirdly, there are numerous off-shore, cheap web contractors who will customise WordPress themes for relatively little money, so outsourcing is pretty straightforward.

So for a web design agency who wants to push out “production line” designs with limited effort, the WordPress route is quite attractive. However, does the client actually get something which is equally slick and convenient or are there downsides to consider?

Where WordPress templates go wrong….

The first and obvious problem is that lots of templates look very similar; indeed you can spot a template site quite easily. They tend to be rather sterile with an over-reliance on huge images and confusing page elements. Some look quite pretty but fail badly when it comes to ease of use. Technical aspects, e.g. load speed for mobile devices, often tend to be implemented poorly, despite the range of caching plugins which are available to help.

We have been approached quite regularly by dentists who have a dental practice website built on WordPress and who wish to transfer away from their existing dental designer. Unfortunately this is not always an easy transition due to problems with the WordPress site and lack of easy support and upgrade path. Almost always, this is down to the supplier choosing the easy template route for the original design but failing to make sure it’s easy to maintain and update. So what are the typical mistakes we see:

lack of a “child” theme. A child theme is the recommended way to work with WordPress, rather than modify the parent theme directly. The child theme should be designed to inherit the characteristics of the parent theme so helping to “future proof” when the (numerous) updates to WordPress occur. This alone does not mean that your design will be unaffected but it’s a good start.

failure to update the core code when WordPress updates – likely due to concern that the template will break

the original template supplier doesn’t update as WordPress updates and consequently the upgrade path is lost. Remember that you must update to ensure your site remains secure and not open to hacking

over-use of plugins which then become defunct and are no longer in step with core WordPress updates

So there are multiple levels of complexity and opportunities for template-based WordPress sites to “break”. This is why many designers who use the template route simply fail to make updates and unfortunately then leave sites vulnerable to hacking.

Whilst it’s fair to say that a diligent web company which uses bespoke design and regular intervention for maintenance, can make a WordPress site work well and keep it updated, the hassle for many is just too much to bother with. Many dental practices are blissfully unaware until they elect to move supplier and get a shock when they find that their website is less transportable than they thought.

The recommended process

At Dental Media we use a variety of content management systems dependent on the application; sometimes WordPress but often not. However, if you do wish to use WordPress, then make sure that your chosen dental designer does the following:

provides a bespoke design, not a template. Remember that a template involves a third-party and is by definition, difficult to manage

guarantees to update the design and keep it compatible alongside the numerous WordPress core and plugin updates and doesn’t charge onerous monthly fees for the task

streamlines the WordPress admin. area to give you a chance of finding what you need to make content updates.

Summary

WordPress offers lots of cheap short-cuts for dental designers but can create a lot of problems for unsuspecting clients. Whilst it’s true to say that any template/CMS combination can be problematic at some stage, the complexities and regular updates of WordPress compound this several fold. So it pays to know what you are doing before you jump in and make sure that your designer guarantees to keep it all in step and secure.

If you are considering a content management system (CMS) for your website, please call the team at Dental Media on 01332 672548 for a transparent discussion about the pros, cons and pitfalls.

The unseen risks of template web designs.
