{"id":6144,"date":"2015-05-01T08:30:32","date_gmt":"2015-05-01T08:30:32","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.dental-media.co.uk\/marketing\/?p=6144"},"modified":"2015-12-09T12:31:24","modified_gmt":"2015-12-09T12:31:24","slug":"why-high-ranking-websites-may-not-deliver","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.dental-media.co.uk\/marketing\/advice\/why-high-ranking-websites-may-not-deliver\/","title":{"rendered":"Good Google Ranking But No New Patients?"},"content":{"rendered":"<h2>Why stale and sterile dentist websites don&#8217;t work.<\/h2>\n<p>We recently completed a new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dental-media.co.uk\/dental-websites.html\" target=\"_blank\">website redesign for a dentist<\/a> who already enjoyed good ranking positions at the top of Google. In spite of this, the practice was not getting many new patients via the website, even though it was only around 18 months old.<\/p>\n<p>The client approached us to help and to make recommendations for improvement. Our initial audit found the following reasons why the website was not performing:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>cold and unappealing branding &#8211; a very clinical, unwelcoming colour scheme<\/li>\n<li>over-use of &#8220;stock&#8221; images with lots of &#8220;false smiles&#8221; in evidence<\/li>\n<li>a confusing navigation structure<\/li>\n<li>no attention-grabbing calls-to-action (CTA)<\/li>\n<li>text content written too technically for the average user<\/li>\n<li>no clear targeting for the type of patients the practice wanted to sign-up<\/li>\n<li>not mobile friendly<\/li>\n<li>a general lack of &#8220;personalisation&#8221; across the whole site<\/li>\n<li>the site had been designed by a general web designer with no experience of dental marketing &#8211; this was abundantly apparent in the very basic design<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Whilst the website content could have been completely reworked within the existing framework, the lack of a mobile optimised design dictated that the website would really be better started afresh.<\/p>\n<h3>How we redesigned the website to promote better user engagement and patient enquiries<\/h3>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>we implemented a fully mobile optimised framework using the latest &#8220;responsive&#8221; design. This will improve the user experience on mobile devices and ensure that the site is fully compliant with Google&#8217;s mobile design guidelines.<\/li>\n<li>a clear and logical navigation system was introduced with key information and contact forms extremely easy to find and use.<\/li>\n<li>we developed a new and appealing colour palette for the website whilst maintaining the existing logo and overall brand identity. It was impractical to completely re-brand but we were able to &#8220;adjust&#8221; the website to present a much more empathetic look and feel.<\/li>\n<li>we conducted in-depth discussions with the practice to understand their ideal new patient persona so that this could be used within the website planning.<\/li>\n<li>our photographer visited the practice to take a full set of photographs of the staff and facilities. These were used to replace the &#8220;samey&#8221; stock shots to bring the human touch and personal feel to the website.<\/li>\n<li>our copywriter completely reworked the website text to make it really user-friendly as well as maintaining sufficient high quality, factual content to preserve the Google rankings.<\/li>\n<li>we emphasised patient stories and testimonials throughout the website to provide &#8220;3rd party&#8221; validation of the high-quality, life-changing dentistry on offer.<\/li>\n<li>we introduced numerous &#8220;before and after&#8221; photographs of various treatments to showcase the dentist&#8217;s skills<\/li>\n<li>although not complete yet, our video team are booked to film the practice and also a selection of patient testimonials to complement the galleries and testimonials already in use on the site.<\/li>\n<li>we developed a set of calls-to-action which are prominent but not off-putting. These can be switched out periodically via the site&#8217;s content management system.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>The result<\/h3>\n<p>As expected, the new website consolidated on the existing good ranking positions, with new treatment searches also coming through onto Google page one. Site bounce rate (measured using Google Analytics) was markedly improved indicating that users were finding the site much more appealing. The real result came with much improved conversions (enquiries) which were up nearly three-fold in the first month alone. I estimate at this rate of new patient acquisition, the website will pay for itself in less than six months.<\/p>\n<h3>Summary<\/h3>\n<p>A website which ranks well in Google won&#8217;t necessarily lead to new patient enquiries. If the site is unappealing for the sorts of reasons discussed above, the chances are that people searching for dentistry in your area will look elsewhere, even if their search results are below yours.
