These factors include the following main elements:

links back to your website from other sites. These can be good and bad! Good links can be considered to be a vote of confidence for your site which Google likes whereas bad links are just the opposite – Google will penalise you for too many of these.

activity on social media. Whilst there is much discussion about how much, if any, SEO advantage can be gained directly from active social profiles, the indirect benefit is unquestionable. By this I mean the use of social channels, Twitter, Facebook, Google+ etc to broadcast useful content about your business which, in turn, will stimulate engagement and also help to build some back-links.

authorship and authority – these terms refer to how search engines, Google in particular, view your value on the web. Authorship status is awarded by Google to authors who produce valuable information and publish regularly on the web. Authority is an umbrella term used to indicate the relative value of a website (or web page) relative to similar pages – the more “authoritative” your page, typically the higher you will rank. You will also tend to see high profile web authors closely allied to authority websites. Establishing authorship and ultimately a high authority website, are key factors within successful SEO strategies. More on authorship and authority here and here.

Historical practice

Historically, off-site SEO was “easy” and was performed by unsophisticated agencies with relatively little skill involved. Lots of poor links built on the cheap by off-shore outfits would gain success as quantity was allowed to out-gun quality. However, in the last two years, Google wised-up and now penalises this type of practice. There is no “cheap and cheerful” SEO any longer.

Current best practice for off-site SEO

This is a huge topic but to summarise quickly, an effective, safe off-site campaign will incorporate the following features:

high-quality link acquisition from good quality, target-relevant websites. Don’t expect to get any favours from Google if you manage to get the local dog grooming parlour to link to your dental practice website.

natural link evolution – if you force link-build, Google will spot and penalise you

anchor text (the words that form the link) need to be natural – so no-more exact match anchors please.

generation and publishing of good quality relevant content on a regular basis. This is broadcast via social channels in a targeted effort to attract and hold the attention of your desired audience.

analysis and monitoring – this covers a huge range of activities designed to evaluate potential opportunities e.g. link prospecting but also to identify possible risks. For example checking to ensure that your back-link profile isn’t becoming polluted with bad links which could attract a website ranking penalty.

Do you need an off-site SEO campaign?

This is heavily dependent on the competitive environment in which you work. We work with dental practices in small towns where competition is limited and consequently little or no SEO activity is needed.

However, we also work with lots of inner city practices where competition is fierce and hence the input is significantly greater.

All SEO projects should be carefully tailored to individual circumstances and never just a “bolt-on” package.

If you feel your website could be faring better in the search engines, why not get in touch with the Dental Media SEO team on 01332 672548?
