A high ranking position is a must – without it your competitors will steal your business from under your nose. But exactly how much difference does that high ranking position make? We are often asked to give an idea of the return on investment a dentist can expect from dental website search engine optimisation (SEO). This is quite a cost outlay if done correctly (please see my earlier blog post from June 1) but the rewards are well worth the investment, particularly when compared to some traditional marketing mechanisms. The following article from the highly respected Search Engine Watch illustrates this very nicely – please take the time to read it:

Top Google Result Gets 36.4% of All Clicks

The summary is quite compelling – simply by moving your website from page two to the lower half of page one in Google, you should expect to see a 200 -> 300% increase in site traffic. This then increases massively as you progress up the rankings to the point where the top three positions command nearly 60% of all traffic. Should we trust this?

A real example taken from a Google Analytics account:

This illustrates the dramatic leap in traffic from page 2 to the lower half of page 1 and supports the data given in the link above. This is not the only example – our experience suggests that if anything, the data may be slightly conservative and even bigger traffic gains might be expected from a page 2 -> page 1 shift.

Conclusion

The majority of new patient referrals now come via websites so it is critical to attain and then hold a dominant Google position. A well constructed and thorough SEO campaign for a dental website may cost several thousands of pounds over a period of 6 – 9 months and thereafter a smaller “maintenance” investment to maintain the ranking positions.

This investment is critical if you want to join the small but growing band of progressive dentists who realise that ROI for SEO outperforms all other forms of dental marketing and really does drive new business to the practice.

At Dental Media we specialise in search engine optimisation for dentists and our client’s sites dominate the search rankings for multiple keywords.
